During my Lying-In I have spent more time than usual watching television. I have noticed a disturbing trend (well, there are plenty of disturbing things on television, but this post is about just one). There are an inordinate number of commercials right now that use terrible parenting as a means of marketing product and services.
I'm thinking back to the old days when a commercial would feature a mother saying, "I buy brand X because it's the very best thing for my family." Those days are gone my friend, right along with rotary phone. These days to sell a product the parent is shown to be either completely clueless or a downright jerk.
It's sad really. And yet we laugh.
Don't believe me? Here are four samples:
This one has the same dude playing the dad as the Geico ad above. He's really good at playing the bad dad.
How I long for the good ol' days with commercials like this:
Indeed. A very clever Mommy.

I loved the Aunt Jemima ad; looks like a great idea, actually! The others I mostly found disturbing and sick and not funny!!
May I add in the birth-control commercials that show kids being kids in a grocery store? Those really toast my marshmallows.
I think you can buy frozen pancakes now a days.
I'm with you -- I don't understand why anyone would want to emulate these bad parents by buying what they buy. If anything, it makes me want to shun these products!
I know what you're saying.
But, the Geico, AT&T, and green shirt one are funny!!! lol
Those pancakes look yummy with apple rings, I'm gonna do that this week. I wanna be a clever mommy. :)
